E.P. Spangenberg was ornithologist-naturalist well
known to the wildlife-fanciers by his popular books on natural history.
Was famous among professional ornithologists for his experience
in watching and collecting the birds.
Originated from a noble family of von Spangenbergs,
born in a village of Transbaikalia. After gymnasia was conscripted
into the Red Army and demobilized in 1921. Graduated from Moscow
University in 1930. Worked in Research Institute of Game and Fur
Farming, participated in numerous expeditions, donated all his collections
to the Museum. In the staff of the latter since 1946, senior researcher
of the Section of Ornithology since 1950. Co-author of fundamental
checklist "Birds of Soviet Union". Was first to gather and keep
oological collections in Russia.
