Born in Moscow, graduated as zoologist from Moscow
University in 1928. Was interested in vertebrate fauna of Central
Russia, especially in amphibians and reptiles. Served as researcher
and curator in the Museum of Central Industrial Region, participated
in several expeditions with Ognev to Central Russia, North Caucasus,
Turkmenia. In 1932 he became senior researcher at the Institute
of Zoology of Moscow University and simultaneously Chief of Section
of Herpetology of the Museum. He did much in developing collections
of that Section, as well as herpetological part of exhibition. He
was appointed deputy dean of Biological Faculty in 1943 and remained,
at requests of his close colleagues, in that position after repressions
of 1948.
