Collection stock of the Division of Invertebrates contains about 200.000 collection items. Because such "item" in many of instances is equal not to a specimen but to a sample (for instance, to a plankton sample), the actual amount of collection of the Division exceeds most probably 2.000.000 specimens. They belong to 55 classes allocated to 22 phyla.
There are three principal preparation forms: dry and wet (in alcohol or in formalin) materials and micropreparations. The main sources of newly coming collections are those brought by persons either in the Museum staff or working in other institutions. A significant contribution is made by amateur donators, as well.
Highly complex structure of the collection stock causes as rather complicated registrar system. It basically agrees with the system adopted for the Museum: there are Book of entries and Registration book, as well as catalogues, but the entire system is more diverse and cumbersome. Electronic data bases are now being created for some most actively developing parts of the collection.
