The total amount of mammal specimens kept in the
Museum is about 210.000. Of them, about 180.000 constitute the major
collection stock, 12.000 specimens are kept in the Division of Evolutionary
Morphology, and there are about 600 type specimens.
The following storage groups are recognized dependently
on the forms of preparation and scientific status of the specimens.
The major collection stock includes the materials with more
or less precise field data and provided with all needed collection
documentation. The auxiliary stock includes the materials
that do not meet the above criteria: they are registered in the
book of entries only. The type collection constitute a separate
unit of the collection stock. The so called "authorial collections"
also are recognized as a separate unit, as they sometime are of
restricted admission to secure the rights of their donators. Collection
documentation also constitutes an evidently separate part of
the entire collection: the registration books are kept in
the closed bookcase while the catalogue cards are located
in special cases. The original field documentations, if come
with the collection specimens (which is preferable) or xerox copies
of such documents, are also stored in a separate bookcase.
The complete (by 1980) catalogue of mammal collection
kept in the Museum is published in:
O.L. Rossolimo, I.Ya. Pavlinov. 1981. A catalogue
of mammal collections of Zoological Museum of Moscow University.
