Geographic composition

The most extensive collections of mammals kept here represent central regions of Russia, Caucasus, Middle Asia, south of West Siberia, Transbaikalia, Russian Far East. North-western part of European Russia, Baltic region, Ukraine and Moldova, East Siberia are represented poorly. Of special interest are very large (several thousands of specimens) collections of skulls of small mammals from middle flow of Yenissei River, the field data including biotope descriptions for each specimen.

The materials from other regions are uneven. Mammals from Mongolia having been collected for several decades are most numerous and important. Less abundant but still interesting are more recent acquisitions from Vietnam, Ethiopia, Peru. Materials from South America, most of Africa, Australasia are nearly absent.
