Type specimen of Pseudoscaphirhynchus described by Kessler

Type collection of fishes counts about 600 items, including more than 120 holotypes and about 450 paratype series. The served as a basis for descriptions of more than 240 species belonging to 62 families of 25 orders.

  The oldest type specimens in the collection of Division of Ichthyology are syntypes of Kessler's species of Pseudoscaphirhynchus and Salmo trutta described by him in 1870s. Besides, of interest are the types described by Gratsianov, Ghor, Herzenstein, Taranets, G. Nikolsky, etc


Type specimen of a loach from recent acquisitions

With the recent developments of marine fisheries and researches of the World Ocean fish faunas in Russia, the Division became depository of the type series of new species described by Russian ichthyologists from tropical waters. Its most extensive part includes types of about 40 newly described fish species from Indian Ocean belonging to 8 orders.
