Pavel Stanislavovich Tomkovich

Doctor of Sci., Leading Researcher. Chair of the Working Group on Waders (CIS), member of the Executive Committee of the International Wader Study Group, member of the International Ornithological Committee, member of the Boad of the Russian Bird Conservation Union, vice-president of the Menzbir Ornithological Society, corresponding member of the American Ornithologists` Union, member of the Editorial Boards of the "Bulletin of Moscow Society of Naturalists" and of the annals "Ornithologia", coordinator of the international project "Arctic Birds Breeding Conditions Survey" (results are published annually, see www.arcticbirds.ru).

Widely recognized expert in Arctic breeding waders, main research interests are in bird fauna, taxonomy, species divergence and natural history of Calidridinae sandpipers. Participated in many expeditions to various sites of Arctic from Franz Josef Land to Chukotka and Alaska. Currently is busy with "The Atlas of the Breeding Waders of the Russian Arctic".

Research interests are in evolution of bird plumage colouration patters. He studies also taxonomy of the cone-billed passerine birds. Participated in field surveys in various regions of Palaearctic, including Russian Far East, Tuva, Himalay Mts.

 

Acknowledged animal artist, illustrated a number of natural history books, including textbooks and guides. Consultant of some TV projects on natural history.

Research interests are in species and subspecies taxonomy of some Palaearctic birds, especially of wagtails. Has conducted field studies in many areas of Palaearctic, as well as in Thailand, Nepal and N America.

Candidate of Sci. Member of Central Council of Moscow Ornithological Society and of Council of Moscow branch of the Russian Union for Bird Conservation, member of Oriental Bird Club and of Aquatic Warbler Conservation Team. Deputy editor of the year-book "Ornithology", co-editor of the serial "Biodiversity of Vietnam", coordinator of the year-book "Birds of Moscow and its vicinities".

Research interests are in functional morphology of the jaw apparatus of passerine birds in relation to their feeding adaptations; in taxonomy, distribution and ecology of the birds of Vietnam; in taxonomy of Pycnonotidae and of some Palaearctic sylviid genera; in conservation problems of Acrocephalus paludicola in Russia. Participated in numerous expeditions to southern Siberia and Russian Far East, to Vietnam.
