History

Division of Ichthyology was organized in 1932. The staff deals with taxonomy, distribution, and evolution of some fish taxa. However, one of the principal tasks of the people working in the Division is to contribute to growth and maintenance of fish collections regardless of their scientific specialization.

At present, ichthyological collection of the Museum by its overall richness in both specimens and species takes the second position among collections of this kind in Russia and belongs to most representative fish collections of the World.

Division of Ichthyology is placed on the 1st floor of the left wing of the Museum building (along Nikitsky Per.). Its main collection rooms (¹ 20-29) are situated along the lobby to the Bony Hall, and its office (room ¹ 21) is situated behind that Hall. The contact phones are 629-49-06.
