Ichthyological collection
The fish collection of the Zoological Museum includes numerous representatives of the ichthyofauna of most of freshwater reservoirs and inland seas of Russia and neighboring countries, as well as some water areas of the World Ocean. The ichthyofauna of continental reservoirs of other regions, especially South America and Africa, are less represented.
Currently, more than 24,000 storage units are registered in the ichthyological collection. Each unit includes a sample of one to several dozens specimens of the same species collected at the same time in one locality. The collection is featured by a significant taxonomic diversity. It presents more than 4,000 species belonging to 56 orders and more than 400 families of the world ichthyofauna. However, different major groups of fish are represented with varying degrees of completeness.
