    Sector of Ornithology

    The staff of the Sector is engaged in the completion and storage of ornithological collections, as well as the study of taxonomy, morphology, geographical distribution, population structure, biology, and conservation of birds.

    The ornithological collection of the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University, in respect to its amount, is the second in the country and about the 15th in the world. It includes 135 450 mounted skins of bird, more than 10,000 egg clutches (mostly with nests), more than 3,600 specimens and their parts preserved in alcohol/formalin, more than 1,800 skeletons, and more than 26,000 tissue samples for genetic research. In total, 395 nomenclatural type specimens of 191 taxa are stored. Almost 180,000 records of bird specimens were entered into the electronic databases.

    The Sector is located on the second floor of the Museum building at the end of its "wing" along Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street, in room No. 47 (passage through the Upper Hall and further to the second floor). It is also advisable to get acquainted with the rules of working with collections in advance.
