    Pavel Stanislavovich Tomkovich

    Head of the Sector since 1977, curator of the oological collection and a part of the collection of mounted skins of non-passerine birds.

    Specialist on taxonomy, distribution, biology, and conservation of the Arctic waders. Born in Moscow. Graduated from the Faculty of Biology of the Moscow State University in 1974. Works at the Zoological Museum: as junior researcher since 1976, as senior researcher since 1990, as leading researcher since 1996. Chairman of the Working Group on Waders (1987-2016), member of a number of organizations: International Group for the Study of Waders, International Ornithological Committee, the Union for the Protection of Birds of Russia, Menzbier Ornithological Society, Russian Society for the Study and Conservation of Birds, corresponding member. American Ornithological Society, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.

    He basically carried out research on waders in various regions of the Russian Arctic (in Franz Josef Land, Taimyr, Chukotka, Yakutia), as well as in Alaska and Australia; actively collected birds in these regions. PhD dissertation "The main directions of divergence in the subfamily Calidridinae" in 1985, doctoral dissertation "The history of the formation and conservation of the species diversity of sandpipers (Calidridinae, Charadriiformes, Aves)" in 1997.

    Evgeny Alexandrovich Koblik

    Senior researcher, curator of the collection of passerine bird mounted skins and wet collection.

    Ornithologist, biogeographer, specialist in the systematics and distribution of birds, popularizer of zoological knowledge, animal painter, naturalist writer and traveler.

    Born in the Moscow region. Graduated from the Geographical Faculty of the V.I. Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (Department of Geography and Biology, 1986). Senior engineer at the Institute of Nature Conservation (1987-1989), in the staff of the Zoological Museum since 1989: guide, junior researcher, senior researcher (since 2004). PhD, dissertation "Comparative analysis of ecological and morphological diversity of Old World buntings" (1997). Author and co-author of more than 400 publications, including 30 books. Member of the Board of the Russian Society for the Conservation and Study of Birds (since 1999); Member of the Russian Geographical Society (since 2019), member of the Russian Association of Researchers of the Himalayas and Tibet (since 2019).

    Conducted field research and collecting of birds in more than 30 countries, including various regions of Russia. His illustrations were published in Russian and foreign books and reference manuals (more than 130 editions in total). One of the creators, scientific editor and scientific consultant of the TV show "Dialogues about animals" (since 1997); screenwriter and participant in the filming of 22 popular science films about nature; author and performer of songs (in the genre of the author's song), member of the creative association "August 32" (since 1995).

    Yaroslav Andreevich Redkin

    Senior researcher, curator of the collection of passerine bird mounted skins and tissue samples, curates primary processing of the collection material coming into the sector. Curates the work of volunteers in the Sector.

    Specialist in taxonomy of the passerine birds of Palaearctic. Born in Moscow. Graduated from the V.I. Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute (Department of Biology and Chemistry, 1997), studied there at the Department of Zoology as a full-time postgraduate (1997-2000). Works at the Zoological Museum since 1994: in technical positions, as junior researcher (since 2000), senior researcher (since 2020). Conducted field studies and collecting of birds in various areas of the Palearctic, as well as in the USA, Thailand, and Nepal. Took part in expeditions along the Northern Sea Route ("Ecology of the Tundra–94"), to the Crimea, the North Caucasus, Western Siberia, Altai Territory, Tuva, central Yakutia, northeastern Transbaikalia, and the lower reaches of the Anadyr River, Primorye Territory, Kamchatka, Sakhalin Is., Kuril Islands (Iturup, Urup), as well as to various areas of the central and northern parts of European Russia. Collected more than 4,000 bird specimens.

    PhD dissertation "Taxonomic relations of forms in evolutionarily young bird complexes on the example of the genus Motacilla L., 1785: taxonomic revision of the subgenus Budytes" (2001). Areas of scientific interests are taxonomy at the species-subspecies levels, geographical variability of birds, fauna, and biogeography.

    Pavel Alekseevich Smirnov

    Assistant curator since 2016, deals with an information support of the ornithological collection, including its electronic database.

    Graduated from the Russian State Social University with a degree in political science (2009); thereafter worked in the tourism business, actively engaged in self-education, wrote popular science essays. In 2021, graduated from the Master's degree of the Institute of Biology and Chemistry (Dept. of Biology and Ecology) at the Moscow State Pedagogical University. Conducted field research in the Vladimir, Leningrad, and Sakhalin regions. Areas of interest are anthropogenic extinction of bird species, taxonomy, biogeography.

    Ilya Arkadievich Murashev

    Technician at the Sector since 2014, though actively involved in the work of the Sector since 2006.

    Ecologist, ornithologist. Born in Engels (Saratov Region). Graduated from Pushchinsky State University in 2010, then full-time post-graduate at the Department of System Ecology of the Pushchino State Natural Science Institute (2010-2013). Worked in the Prioksko-Terrasny Nature Reserve (2009-2012), in the Branch of the Moscow State University in Pushchino (2013-2014). Conducted ornithological research in the Crimea, Moscow, Tula, Murmansk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo regions, Altai, Kamchatka, Commander Islands, Franz Josef Land, Cyprus, Tajikistan and South India, the White, Barents, Kara Seas, Pacific and Arctic Oceans.

    Yulia Alexandrovna Ermilina

    Technician at the Sector since 2014, though has been involved in the work of the Sector since 2011.

    In 2011 graduated from the K. A. Timiryazev Russian State Agricultural Academy with a degree in Biology (specialization "Game management"). Studied at the full-time postgraduate school at the Institute of Ecology and Evoluiton of RAS (2011-2014).

    Currently, works in the Sectors of Ornithology and Mammalogy, maintains electronic databases and registration of new acquisitions, prepares incoming collection material. Collected birds in Karelia and the Murmansk Region; since 2009, participated in the studies of a population of feral horses at the Rostovsky State Reserve since 2009.

    Diana Ruslanovna Zhgir

    Ornithologist, taxidermist, volunteer of the Sector since 2018, assistant curator since 2020; deals with electronic database, inventory, arrangement, and maintenance of collection.

    Graduated from the Faculty of Biology of the Tver State University (2019). Master of the Institute of Biology and Chemistry at the Moscow State Pedagogical University. Conducted field research and collecting in Karelia, Buryatia, Tver, Moscow, Murmansk, Leningrad, and Kaliningrad regions, Cis-Caucasia, Yakutia, Primorye Territory, Sakhalin and the Kurils (Urup, Iturup). Areas of interest are subspecific taxonomy, geographical and age-sex variability of birds, bird banding.

    Tatiana Yurievna Belyakova

    Freelance volunteer of the Sector since 2012.

    Lawyer, engaged in legal and practical issues of protection of rare and endangered animals and plants. Graduated from the Russian State Humanities University and the Modern Humanitarian Institute (1997). In the staff of the Darwin Museum (1987-1998), the State Committee of Ecology of the Ministry of Natural Resources (since 1998), a leading methodologist of the Moscow Zoo and Bird Park "Vorob’i" (since 2001). Curates completion, arrangement, and cataloging of the collection of samples of tissues for genetic analysis, and also the restoration of stuffed animals in the Museum exposition.

    Anna Nikolaevna Kalandadze
    Taxidermist, volunteer of the Sector since 2013, laboratory assistant since 2018. The granddaughter of a well-known paleontologist N.N. Kalandadze (1939-2015) of the Paleontological Institute RAS, PhD. Graduated from the Restoration Department of the Art and Humanities College. Prepared more than 1300 bird mounted skins. Conducted field collecting in the Moscow and Ivanovo Regions.
