    Atlas "Mammals of Russia"

The main goal of the project is to collect the most complete information on the distribution of mammals in the Russian Federation and provide free access to this information. The technical details of the project are described at this link.

The professionals, amateurs, and government agencies are interested in publishing detailed data on the distribution of animals. Today, such data are scattered across many hundreds of publications, most often in inaccessible issues. Most of the information is concentrated in the unpublished reports, diaries, and other handwritten sources. The published maps and verbal descriptions of the species distribution are not detailed enough for the nowadays public inquiry. A huge amount of information is completely inaccessible to the scientific community: these are numerous observations by nature fans published daily on social networks and other Internet resources. At the same time, amateur naturalists in many countries play a leading role in recording the distribution of animals. As a matter of fact, correct identification of the species of small mammal, unlike birds, can be made in many cases by respective experts only. The project “Mammals of Russia” intends to provide a professional support for each entry in the database, including consultations on correct identification of both the mammals and the traces of their activity, etc.

One of the main objectives of the project is to create the Atlas of the distribution of mammals in the territory of the Russian Federation. But this is a gross task for a better future. The first stage should be creation of the Atlas of distribution of mammals in the European part of Russia. Unfortunately, Russia acts as a catch-up in this initiative. In many European countries, the national databases of animal distribution have already been created, which are being actively updated annually with new encounters and records. In the first edition of the European Atlas of Mammals (1999), the territory of the Russian Federation is not filled with data at all. The reason for this is the lack of information suitable for an analysis. The project “Mammals of Russia” will make every effort to ensure to make our country adequately represented in the second edition of this Atlas.
